- Equipment has no normally arcing parts
- Thermal effects incapable of ignition
- nA = non sparking
- nR = restricted breathing
- nC = hermetically sealed non-incendive

- Expels ignitable vapor / gasv
- Maintains positive enclosure pressure
Intrinsic Safety “ia” – “ib”

- Incapable of releasing enough energy to cause an explosion
